The Shaugers Raise Over $20,000 for First Annual Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser
October 12, 2015
On Wednesday, October 7, 2015, Donald and Lisa Shauger of The Shauger Group (TSG), alongside the West Orange PBA Local 25 and the West Orange Scholarship Fund (WOSF), hosted the first annual Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser at Mayfair Farms in West Orange. Over 140 people were in attendance, and 100 percent of the proceeds went towards the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship. All expenses were underwritten by Star-Lo Electric, Inc. and Worth & Company, Inc.
During his lifetime, Officer Groves was a mentor to children in West Orange, volunteered with the Special Olympics and served as the West Orange Police Department youth program coordinator. In 2009, he was named West Orange Police Officer of the Year – Groves even received various honors for citizenship, community service and valor. Some of his other accomplishments over the years included:
- 2001 Life Saving Award, Command Citation-Apprehending Burglary Suspect
- 2001 Essex County Valor A Award
- 2009 Essex County Scholarship “B” Award
- 2009 200 Club Valor Award – Outstanding Action in the Line of Duty
- 2009 Christian Love Baptist Church Community Service Award
- 2010 Essex County “A” Award
- 2011 West Orange Elks Citizen of the Year for recognition of Exceptional Contribution to the Youth Development program with the Township of West Orange
- Elks Distinguished Citizen Award – Outstanding Meritorious Service to Humanity
Upon hearing of his passing, the Shaugers knew that there had to be a meaningful way in which they could honor their lifelong friend. In July 2014, in Groves’ honor, they ultimately founded the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship (part of the WOSF), which benefits students in financial need who are interested in pursuing a degree in Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice.
In May 2015, the scholarship benefited its first ever recipient, Thomas Sayers, who is currently attending Florida’s Saint Leo University.
Lisa Shauger, President/CEO of TSG, stressed how important it was for them to honor Groves in this manner.
“Officer Groves was an extraordinary human being who generously gave up his time to the community in so many ways, especially to the youth,” said Lisa Shauger. “We could not think of a better way to memorialize Tim [Groves] but to have a scholarship in his name.”
This comes at a time when college tuition appears to be more difficult to afford, between meal plans, textbooks and other expenses.
“My wife Lisa and I, along with the team that is here from the West Orange PBA and the West Orange Scholarship Fund, are going to keep Timmy Groves’ name in the limelight like it deserves,” said Donald Shauger, TSG’s Executive Vice President. “We are going to make sure that seniors in the high school here in West Orange that are going to pursue Criminal Justice will receive a scholarship, so that they’ll be able to go to college because unfortunately today, without a college degree, you’re not going to be able to accomplish the things that we’ve been able to accomplish at The Shauger Group.”
Steve Weatherford, Super Bowl champion, former New York Giants punter and philanthropist, was also in attendance. Weatherford spoke of providing the less fortunate with a chance to thrive.
“The sad reality is, a lot of children in our community don’t have the opportunity to pursue their dreams,” said Weatherford. “To me, that’s one of the saddest things that you could ever encounter in life – somebody who has big dreams, has big aspirations and the work ethic to chase them and achieve them, but they don’t have the opportunity. I’m very blessed to call Don a best friend, very blessed to call New Jersey home and incredibly thrilled to be here tonight to support the memory of Timothy Groves.”
Prior to the start of the event, the fundraising committee, which consists of Lisa Shauger (chairwoman, Donald Shauger, Richard Rizzolo (WOSF President), James Quinn (WOSF Treasurer), WOPD Officer Christopher Jacksic (West Orange PBA Location 25 President), Darren Dangler (Dangler Funeral Homes) and Nicholas Saraceno (TSG), had an initial goal of raising $10,000 towards the scholarship. It turns out that they surpassed this, by a considerable margin.
Overall, the committee generated over $20,000, thanks to bighearted supporters.
