Donald and Lisa Shauger Donate Sacred Painting to Our Lady of Lourdes

October 29, 2015

On Thursday, October 22, 2015, Donald and Lisa Shauger stopped by Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Orange with one initial purpose. After watching Pope Francis’s visit to Philadelphia this past September, the Shaugers found themselves gravitating towards a painting that was on display during his visit to the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.

They decided to present Our Lady of Lourdes with a replica of the world-renowned painting not only to honor its beauty, but as a way to represent the Papal Visit as well. Additionally, the gift celebrates the Shaugers getting married at Our Lady of Lourdes 30 years ago.  Don and Lisa with The Holy Family

Known as “The Holy Family,” Neilson Carlin’s 48×60-inch creation features Jesus Christ as a toddler, surrounded by Mary, her parents, Anne and Joachim, along with Joseph. Christ is believed to be about 2 years old, and with Carlin’s use of lights and shadows, the Son of God is made the focal point of the oil painting.

The masterpiece was revealed and blessed at the Cathedral Basilica on September 7, receiving additional attention when Pope Francis celebrated mass there on September 26 and at the 2015 World Meeting of Families Mass on September 27.

According to Carlin, a medallion on the upper left hand corner represents the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, while the medallion on the top right symbolizes the coat of arms of Pope Francis. One may also notice the white lilies scattered throughout, which symbolize the Holy Mother’s purity.

“MMXV,” which is Roman for “2015,” represents the year that the World Meeting of Families was celebrated. The Holy Family

“It is truly an honor for Lisa and me to donate such a spiritual and meaningful painting of The Holy Family to Our Lady of Lourdes, the church we were married in 30 years ago this month,” said Donald Shauger, Executive Vice President of The Shauger Group. “Besides Our Lady of Lourdes, we will be donating one [The Holy Family painting] to our parish in Randolph, Resurrection Parish, and St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Long Beach Island. We will also be presenting Father Kevin Quinn, the President of the University of Scranton, with a replica.”

While the Shaugers were at Our Lady of Lourdes, Father Jim Ferry performed a marriage blessing to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, which was last week.

“The Holy Family” will be available for viewing at Our Lady of Lourdes during selected times.
