TSG and West Orange Education Foundation Raise Over $15,000 at Second Annual Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship Raffle Fundraiser
February 7, 2020
In yet another year of successful fundraising, over $15,000 was raised to benefit the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship fund Donald and Lisa Shauger established with the West Orange Education Foundation in 2014.
The funds were raised as part of the second annual Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser Raffle, hosted by The Shauger Group (TSG) and West Orange Education Foundation this past winter. From October through December, TSG and the West Orange Education Foundation sold tickets for the fundraiser raffle—one hundred percent of raffle ticket proceeds directly benefited the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship, which distributes need-based scholarships to West Orange students each year.
On December 20, 2019, TSG and the West Orange Education Foundation held a drawing to announce the winners of the raffle prizes. In total, six raffle prizes were awarded: two Broadway tickets to Dear Evan Hansen; two Platinum Lounge tickets to Celine Dion’s Courage World Tour in concert (including VIP parking and all-inclusive food and nonalcoholic drink at Newark’s Prudential Center); and four pairs of lower-level tickets, with parking passes included, to New Jersey Devils home games (against the New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, and Boston Bruins, respectively). The raffle drawing was timed intentionally around the holidays, so that the prizes could be perfect holiday gifts for the lucky winners.
Back in 2014, the Shaugers founded the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship with the West Orange Education Foundation, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, in memory of one of their friends, former West Orange police officer Timothy Groves. Officer Groves left a huge mark on the West Orange community, not just because of his service with the police department, but also because of his commitment to volunteerism and to programs that aided the people of West Orange. He was always particularly invested in helping youth, whether he was volunteering with Special Olympics, mentoring West Orange children, or serving as the police department’s youth program coordinator. When Officer Groves passed away in 2013 after a valiant battle with cancer, the Shaugers knew the best way they could honor him was to start a scholarship in his name—a scholarship that would reward students who followed closely in his footsteps, particularly with a similar dedication to community service.
“Timmy Groves’s devotion to the West Orange community knew no limits,” said Donald Shauger, executive vice president of TSG. “There is no better way to keep his memory alive than to find students who exhibit many of Timmy’s traits—selflessness, a strong work ethic, and a passion for community service, to name a few—and give them a college scholarship in his name. During his lifetime, he gave so much of his time paying it forward and helping the youth of West Orange. There is no doubt Timmy would be proud to know how many West Orange students have received financial aid in his honor.”
Since the Shaugers first established the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship, the scholarship has provided need-based financial scholarships to 35 students in total. The Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship was most recently awarded in June 2019, when 10 graduating West Orange High School seniors received the honor at Senior Awards Night. The 2019 Groves Memorial Scholarship recipients received $10,150 in scholarship funds, in what was the fifth consecutive year in which it was awarded.
The prior year, in 2018, TSG partnered with the West Orange Education Foundation to hold the very first fundraiser raffle to benefit the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship. In previous years, they had also hosted fundraiser dinners to support the scholarship.
As always, TSG and the West Orange Education Foundation were grateful for the support shown for the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of those who purchased raffle tickets and others who simply donated to the scholarship, over $15,000 can be awarded in future scholarships to West Orange students.
“Don and I have been blown away by the success of the Timothy Groves Memorial Scholarship over the last several years,” said Lisa Shauger, president of TSG. “We are so passionate about this scholarship, and we are appreciative of every single person who has supported it. Thanks to those who gave generously toward the recent raffle, even more students will get help toward their college education.”
